How can i get started on learning to knit?

Question: How can i get started on learning to knit?

(Posted by: Girl on 2010-03-02 16:37:03)

What things should I learn first and what should I make first? What do I need to get started(knitting needles and what else, what size)? And how long will it take for me to learn how to make something simple? Thanks for answering. Or crochet? Can I learn both at once?

The Learn to Knit section of lionbrand.com is excellent. I started off using size 7 needles, and size 4 yarn. It should take you 2-4 nights to make a simple scarf, as you'll have to get used to the motions first. See if you can borrow needles and 1 skein of yarn to practice first.

Lionbrand.com is great for instructions that you can print out. It also has a great library of free patterns (some really cute easy mitts would be a good first project) they are done in garter stitch. Also, the website knittinghelp.com has some very good video instructions if you are like me and learn better by seeing someone else do it. Youtube also has videos on how to knit. I've been knitting for more years than I can count and the above are my favorite sites.

You'll need needles and yarn. I guess you can pick out your yarn first, and read the label to see what size knitting needle you should use. It will say "US __ ". Then pick the appropriate needles based on the yarn's packaging. I would suggest a worsted or bulky weight yarn (those will call for needle sizes 7-13) so that you don't have to work forever to finish a project. You'll probably need a tapestry needle to weave in the ends when you finish the project as well. You should learn knit stitch, and probably purl stitch too. They're both fairly simple. knittinghelp.com is a great resource. As far as what you should make, I would suggest something flat, such as a scarf or a potholder. Dishcloths are also a popular option. knittingpatterncentral.com has a lot of free patterns you can use. Scarfs take longer, but it really depends on how fast and how often you knit. Hope this helps! :)

First, I would suggest you start with knitting, it's easier and takes less dexterity. Once you catch on , your project will go very quickly. A scarf is a great item to start with as it is only about 10-20 stitches and is straight knitting. Here is the link to a really great How-To video from Mrs. Moskowitz' knits. She is very easy to follow and you'll learn quickly:youtube.com/ watch?v= yzz5QR0HG0E &NR= 1 And here is another How-To video..no speaking, just a visual. I prefer Mrs. Moskowitz, but that's just me, I thought I'd give you a choice: youtube.com/ watch?v= 3uw-nUvGrBY Good luck!
