After learning the garter stitch, which stitches should you learn next?

Question: After learning the garter stitch, which stitches should you learn next?

About 4 years ago I learned how to knit, but I was only taught how to do the garter stitch. I want to learn more, but not sure which ones to learn first or where to learn them. What do you recommend? I would also like to know which stitch/ pattern is best for a baby blanket. Thanks guys.

Hi. I just learned to knit recently. Knit and purl is all you need to learn...everything else is a combination of the two. So, learn to purl and the combination of a row of knit and then a row of purl is a stockenette. A baby blanket done in the stockenette stitch is really pretty even if that's as far as you go. Have fun

Purl. there are videos on youtube and tutorials at Lion brand yarn.com, red heart yarn.com, etc if you want to make nice baby blankie, all patterns are a combination of knit and purl to make pattern.
